The Institute of Musical Instrument Technology accreditation scheme was set up so that members of the musical public could locate accredited musical instrument technicians working in their locality. With the backing of the IMIT they can be assured that the relevant technician works to the high standards demanded by the Institute.

This evolved through the electronic organ, the Fender Rhodes and WurliTzer electric pianos and into the 1980s when electronic keyboards became popular, finally culminating in digital pianos, some of which have sophisticated sampled sounds of Steinway, Bösendorfer and Yamaha grands and other upright instruments, and whose keys are weighted and simulate the acoustic piano feel.
