INSTITUTE OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENT TECHNOLOGY

How to join the IMIT

Do you wish to join the Institute of Musical Instrument Technology?

Ideally, you will have had formal training in some aspect of the trade. However, as few training establishments have existed in recent years this may not have been available to you. If you have had some training at a private establishment, such as a music shop or under the guidance of a qualified professional, then you might still be eligible to join.

If you are being trained, or under the guidance of a professional in the industry, you could be eligible to become a Student/Apprentice or an Associate

STUDENT/APPRENTICE: A student/Apprentice has to be at least 16 years old and to be studying for a career in musical instrument technology, manufacture or maintenance, either at an approved educational establishment or under the direction of a Fellow or Member of the Institute,

ASSOCIATE (A.I.M.I.T.): An Associate has to have been regularly educated in musical instrument technology and to have been engaged for at least two years in musical instrument manufacture or maintenance.

If you have been practising as a professional musical instrument maker, repairer or tuner for seven years, you could be eligible to become a full Member.
MEMBER (M.I.M.I.T.): A Member has to have been a practising musical instrument maker or repairer of at least seven years' standing and to have either held a position of responsibility for at least five years or to have carried out research of acknowledged importance.
If you have no personal contact with a Corporate Member or Fellow of the Institute,  then an employer or other suitable contact in the Musical Instrument trade may be considered as a suitable reference.
